Golfers Have No Legal Duty to Yell “Fore”

I was just cruising around the internet the other day and came across this article on a law site that discusses a law suit that is local to my area but could be an issue for anyone that golfs in the United States. Apparantly one golf buddy is suing another because his eye had been injured by a ball struck by his partner. In the article it explains that the courts in New York found that any golfer on the course has assumed a certain amount of risk just by playing the game. If you are struck by a ball, it is in a sense, your own fault for being on the course. [Read more →]

So Much Improvement, Still So Far Away

I played a round at the beautiful Emerson Golf Course in Emerson, New Jersey this weekend and have to say that I am really starting to improve my game as a whole. I continue to hit greens from distances up to 170 yards out, hit fairways, and finally have started to pitch and chip effectivly. That combination led to my career best score of 103 on a not so easy course.

The course’s site just doesn’t do the course justice. It was in superb condition and had some of the toughest rough I have seen this early in the season. They also employed a system that started some groups on the front 9 and some on the back 9 to speed up play. A brilliant move if you ask me. More than anything the course made you use your course management abilities if you were going to score well, this wasn’t a long drive competition. [Read more →]

Long Time No Updates…

I appologize for the lack of updates this week but I have been playing a ton of golf. I have hit all the usual courses: West Sayville, Timber Point and Indian Island. There were many positives and negatives from each round with certain parts of my game shining at different times. I’m not going to do a formal round review because there were no ground breaking round. That isn’t to say I didn’t learn anything new, just that they were very typical of the rounds that I have already reviewed so far this year.

I started the weekend a little early by playing nine holes after work on Thursday at West Sayville. It was the first really nice day of the year and I just couldn’t resist playing. Myself and a friend of mine found the course to be in very good shape. I played some pretty good golf driving the ball very well and hitting some really good approach shots from up to 150 yards. The highlight was a 154 yard approach shot on the ninth hole that landed softly on the green. I shot a disappointing 53 considering the vast improvement in driving and my iron shots. As usual my work on and around the green involved a lot of skulled wedges and three putting. [Read more →]

How Much Did You Pay For That New Driver???

I have recently been toying around with the idea of buying a new driver, possibly the Taylor Made R9. It got me to thinking about all of the money golfers spend on clubs, balls, and bags. Wouldn’t it be better off for a higher handicap player to focus on their swing and learn a little more about the game?

  1. Hitting the ball straight doesn’t mean you have a good swing – Getting that new driver and setting up the weights to straighten out your slice sounds like a great idea but what about later in your career when you want to work the ball for a certain shot shape. The flaw that causes your slice might make that impossible. I would rather know my swing is sound than wonder whether my new driver is going to perform the same as the old one. [Read more →]
